Last Blog Post

This year I learned about outline notes and how to write a formal paper. In History class I learned about prehistory, archaeology, Mesopotamia, Indus valley, ancient Egypt, bronze age Aegean, Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. The thing that will help me most in the future is outline notes for writing papers. I am proudest of the essays that I did. My favorite part of Ancient history class was the Ancient Greece Unit. This class was not like I excepted it to be because it was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

Our last unit of the year was the Ancient Rome unit which was my favorite unit we did this year. Some of the important events we learned during this unit would include in 753 BC when Rome was Founded and it started the beginning of the monarchy. The next important date was when the republic was created in 509 BC and it ended the monarchy. Another important date was the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. In 27 BC the republic ended, so the empie and Pax Romana begun with the reign of Octavian. In AD 476 the Last emperor was desposed and in AD 1453 the Byzantine Empire fell to the Ottoman Empire. I invite you to go to my Ancient Rome page to read my formal research paper over the Five Good Emperors.

Introduction to Ancient Greece

One of our last units that we did in Ancient history class was the Ancient Greece unit. Some of my favorite topics in this subject would include all the battles that took place back then. Another topic would be the trial of Socrates and how crazy it was that he would die for something so little. I invite you to check out my Socrates essay on my Ancient Greece page.

Bronze Age Aegeans

This unit we went over the Bronze Age Aegeans which are the Minoans,  Hebrews, and the Phoenicians. One of the most important details about the Phoenicians is that they used the north star to navigate so they could sail during the night and go faster than anyone before. An interesting fact about the Minoans is that they had no fortifications and hardly any weapons which could mean they were peaceful. An important fact about the Hebrews is that they started the first ethical monotheism.

Intro to Ancient Egypt

The next subject we learned about in ancient history class was about Ancient Egypt. In my opinion this is my favorite subject yet because there is so much you can learn about Ancient Egypt. I just touched the surface of this ancient civilization because the Egyptians ruled for 3000 years. my favorite fact about the Egyptians was that they performed surgeries on the body which was unheard of in ancient times. I made a power point full of facts about Abu simbel, the temples of Karnak, and other temples/complexes. I invite you to visit my Egypt page that has facts about the Egyptian civilization along with my power point on the temples.

Intro to Hinduism and Buddhism

Intro to Hinduism and Buddhism
In our next Ancient History unit we went over two religions that started in India, Hinduism and Buddhism. For the Hindus there is no date of origin because it started so long ago there are no records of its beginning and the Hindus make up the 3rd largest religion in the world. The Buddhist religion started in approximately 560 B.C. and it is still going today, the Buddhist religion makes up the 4th largest religion in the world. The ultimate goal for the Hindus is moksha which is the perfect state of enlightenment which breaks the chain of reincarnations, also you have to achieve the union of atman with Brahman and follow dharma and have good karma. The ultimate goal for the Buddhist is Nirvana which is the perfect state of enlightenment which breaks the chain of reincarnations, blissful nothingness and a release from suffering and desire. Two major ways these religions are different is that Hinduism has no founder or date and the Buddhists have Siddhartha Gautama as their founder and a date of 560 B.C., also the Hindus follow many gods and the Buddhists have no gods.

The key beliefs for the Hindus is to worship Brahman, Brahma, Vishnu, Ganesha, Shiva, and etc. and they don’t have any other leaders except gods. The Hindus attitude toward the caste system is like Sumer where the wealthy rule and the untouchables can’t be touched. The Buddhist beliefs include listening to the Buddha and the Buddhists attitude toward the caste system is the Buddhists trying to escape it. The sacred texts of the Hindus are the Upanishads, Tripitaka and the eightfold path. The ultimate goal for the Hindus is to unite your soul with Brahman. The goal of the Buddhists is to become enlightened like the Buddha. I invite you to read my complete comparison essay on my Indus Valley page.
